Ed sat down in front of the computer, cup of tea in hand, and switched it on. It was probably too early for him to be up but he was so used to getting up before dawn that 6am seemed like a lie in, he even felt slightly lazy despite the fact that it was his day off.
He’d been thousands of miles away from his family and friends for months now, it was the price he paid for being such an amazing scientist he supposed. His emails, and Skype on the weekends, were the only way he could speak to them with any real regularity.
As soon as his computer had decided to warm up and open Windows, he may need a new one sooner rather than later, he opened his web browser and up popped his email ready for him to sign in. The big bold number told him that he had only one new message since he last checked in. He sighed, this was a common occurrence during the week, he supposed that everyone was just busy.
He clicked it up and found out that it was a forward from Al full of LOL cat pictures. He rolled his eyes and smiled, that was just like Al. Ed decided not to reply to or forward it, he figured Al had probably already sent it everyone they knew or had ever known and they might not appreciate receiving it twice no matter how cute the kittens were.
Instead he clicked compose and opened up a new, blank message box. He typed Roy into the ‘To’ field and clicked on the email address when it popped up. They’d been emailing back and forth since before he’d moved so far away. They usually discussed science and their friends, the upcoming wedding of Sheska and her mad scientist boyfriend was a big topic lately. Nobody had seen this match up coming, how could they have? After all, it was Kimblee! When had Sheska even met him?
He started writing ‘Hey Roy’ in the subject box then promptly deleted it. ‘Morning Roy’ came next followed by more deleting. It wasn’t morning over there. ‘Night Roy’, delete. It wasn’t night over here. He sat and thought for a moment taking a sip of his cooling tea and grimacing at the taste, he preferred it much hotter, but still taking another sip anyway.
Just how was he supposed to start this email? He never usually emailed so early. It was usually midday or evening before he got a chance to send any mail and that made it easy. He supposed he could just use ‘Hey’ but that sounded boring to him, it wasn’t enough somehow. Then Ed smiled, the cup going back down and his fingers reaching for the keyboard.
‘Niorning Roy’. That was perfect and surely Roy would get it but just in case Ed added an explanation of what niorning meant, it was his own new word after all and he couldn’t expect Roy to get it that quickly. Explanation done he began his email. ‘You’ll never guess who came to the lab today…’
It turned out to be a long one but it was mostly about work and Ed didn’t really expect much of a reply back, it was just nice to tell someone, to talk to them in a sense. Roy was always so busy that even a quick email just to say hi always made Ed more than happy because it meant that Roy was at least thinking of him.
Ed sent the email and sat back to think, there were so many new words he could make up to span the time zones, he wondered if it should it be aftight or aftning?? He had plenty of time to figure it out while he waited for a reply. He reached for a piece of paper and started his day of procrastination and invention.
