Title: The Pawn
Pairing/Characters: Roy/Riza, one-sided Ed/Roy
Rating: G
Words: 322
Summary: Ed may be in the game but only as a pawn.
A.N: I wrote this a while ago, even posted it to a comm under my other account because I wasn’t sure I wanted it associated with me as it’s not my usual kind of fic but screw it (I did take it down though before posting it here). I wrote it, I’m going to post it! I’m not really all that happy with it, it needs fixing but I don’t know how so it will have to do as is for now.
~*~*~*~
Ed watched them talk and he felt his heart begin to hurt as it always did when he saw them together. He shouldn’t be surprised really, she was his queen after all, and he was her king. Ed was just a pawn, not really important in the grand scheme of things.
To be fair, he’d done this to himself, he knew that. He had pretended he was in the game when he hadn’t even really a player. It would never change. He would always belong to her and she would always belong to him. Exclusive to each other, no matter what they told the outside world.
Ed had thought, for just one moment, that maybe he had made it inside. That maybe he had found a way to share that space in his heart with her but watching them now, the way they spoke, the little things that were such big clues about their feelings – her touching his arm; him smiling in a way he didn’t let anyone else see; him pushing her hair behind her ear – he knew he hadn’t even made a dent.
He watched for a few moments more, his eyes beginning to cloud over, a tell-tale sign he was about to cry. He closed his eyes, turned, and walked away.
He was happy for them, he really was, he knew they belonged together, but that knowledge didn’t make him feel any better. It didn’t make that pain clutching at his heart lessen. It didn’t stop the tears from silently falling down his face.
But really, what did he expect when he was just a pawn trying to play the same game as the king and queen. Everybody knew that the pawn didn’t hold any real power in the game. Just like everybody knew that Roy Mustang and his lieutenant, Riza Hawkeye, were meant to be together and there was not a person alive that could come between them.
